Josh Kenaran

Age: 20 (born 21 BBY)

Race: male human(oid)

Appearance: 1,75m, short, quick and nimble. Short light-blonde hair. Blue eyes.

Personality

Calm and reserved. Very obedient to his superior(s) (in this case, Cerena). Dedicates himself to become a Jedi and wants to be committed to the light side in the purest sense. At the moment, however, he has trouble controlling his emotions because of the death of his parents, who were (recently) killed during the war.

"And what about the Rebellion?" he asked. "Do they even stand a chance against the Empire, now that the Sith are on their side?"

Upon learning of the greater conflicts out there (Rebellion-Empire and Jedi-Sith), Josh decides to leave his increasingly meaningless existence on Rudrig to pursue the path of the Jedi.

At peace with himself... Josh still wasn't sure if he was. Part of him still felt more or less responsible for the death of his parents, and even though he was doing better coping with his parents' death, he still hadn't been able to give it a place in his heart. He feared it could always remain his weakness: thinking about it invoked emotions, but a Jedi should be in control of his emotions all the time. (source)

Background

Since Josh was a child he used to travel with his parents, who owned a freighter called the Stardrifter. During the war between the Rebellion and the Empire, they would secretly work for a Rebellion base on Brigia, smuggling weapons and other cargo.

He remembers a planet called Socorro and vaguely recalls being there more than once in his early youth. Perhaps this could be his 'home planet'.

During one of their missions, shortly after leaving Brigia, they got attacked by an unknown vessel (possibly a bounty hunter). Sensing danger he quickly warned his parents, but at that time they were already too far from Brigia to return. His parents told him to get into his dad's fighter and leave, which he did. Because he was only 12 years old and inexperienced he couldn't figure out in time how to operate the weapons systems and couldn't stop the bounty hunter crippling his parents' vessel. The cockpit was blown open to space and there were no life signs left on the ship, leaving it drifting in space.

Figuring it was too dangerous to return to Brigia, Josh made his way to Rudrig. He managed to make his way to civilization and (after wandering around for a while) was taken in by a friendly couple who became his 'foster parents'. As he started growing older he started working as a mechanic and also still flies his father's fighter from time to time, familiarizing himself with the vessel.

Jedi powers and fighting style

Josh's friendly and peaceful nature, partially combined with the fact that his sparring partner Carr would outclass him on the physical level, made him developing a very defensive combat style. He had already been focussing more on heightening his senses, speed and reflexes in his pilot training sessions, and he figured he should apply them in combat as well. Those abilities, as well as anticipating his opponent's moves, seemed more important to him than his strength and attacking techniques. (source)

Josh started feeling doubts. Was he really at peace with himself? Because if he wasn't, it would surely affect his progress. (source)

An idea came to mind. I should wait for openings... He realized. Until now, his 'surprise attacks' didn't have any effect on Carr. That was because he hadn't been using them at the right times. (source)

Cerena now trained him a variety of different techniques and Josh definitely felt himself improving. His endurance improved greatly, as did his reaction speed and reflexes. (source)

RP notes

Since Erdric couldn't afford him as a full-time employee anymore, they both agreed Josh could still work part-time at the repair shop until he would leave Rudrig.

"You asked me how you can deal with the emotions you're feeling over your parents' fate. I think you can turn those feelings into determination. Jedi dedicate themselves to the protection of other beings; we prevent injustice like the attack on your freighter. As a Jedi, you can help make a difference to the galaxy; and, in so doing, honour your parents' memory. But you must let go of these negative emotions that cloud your judgment. Your parents wouldn't have wanted that, would they?" (source)
